How to Care for Agave Utahensis

Long spines agave utahensis var eborispina

Agave utahensis is a beautiful and tough plant with a fascinating history. It is highly desired by collectors and gardeners around the world, but it isn’t very difficult to care for. Being the northernmost agave species, utahensis is also the most cold hardy agave, regularly surviving snow-covered, sub-zero winters in its habitat. This makes it an excellent choice for colder climate zone growers who’d like to have an agave hardy enough to survive the winter.

Beyond temperature, two of the most important aspects of utahensis care are light and soil:

Indoors: Agave utahensis can be grown indoors, but it will probably need supplemental lighting for it to be at its best. It does well under high power LED bulbs and panels.

Outdoors: Utahensis really loves the full sun, outdoors, once it’s been acclimated. But young or previously indoor-only plants can be sun damaged quickly.

Soil: Utahensis, like all agave needs a well-draining soil full of inorganic materials. Depending on the climate where you live, you may need more, or less organic matter in your soil mix.
