Wholesale Agave Utahensis Sales

Humans have been using agave utahensis for at least 7,000 years and here in the Las Vegas Valley it has been an important food source for a variety of indigenous groups. It was also valued for its use in making rope, baskets, and other tools. Throughout its range, ancient agave roasting pits used by local First Nations can still be seen today.

Agave utahensis is the most cold-hardy agave, and as such it has captured the attention of gardeners in regions with harsh winters. Its ability to survive and thrive in such conditions has made it a favorite among enthusiasts and horticulturists. US Department of Energy research reports utahensis as hardy down to -9 degrees Fahrenheit. Most experts agree that it can thrive in USDA hardiness zones as cold as 5 and 6. In the UK, utahensis has even been given the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Its small size, incredible terminal spine shapes, and beautiful blue glaucous leaf coloration have made it a collector’s favorite, particularly in the Asian markets where it appears in luxury boutiques associated with fashion brands.

Ethics

Many experts believe that agave utahensis is in danger from a variety of threats, including climate change, and land development. But the most unfortunate peril facing a. utahensis today is poaching. Thousands of wild plants are dug up each year, both legally and illegally, and sold to the highest bidder on marketplaces like eBay, Etsy, and Yahoo Auctions Japan. This has meant that populations that once displayed extraordinary traits have been decimated and all that are left are rather unremarkable individuals, deemed unworthy by collectors.

All of the agave utahensis I sell I seed grow myself, from seed I’ve produced by hand-pollinating flowering plants in my collection. My aim is to reduce market demands for poached and wild collected plants, while preserving biodiversity in a way that industrial-scale mono tissue culturing factories can not.

Utahensis grows very slowly and requires constant attention and the perfect conditions to develop into the gorgeous forms befitting this amazing species.
